What size chandelier for a staircase?

For a stairwell, height matters more than width. Measure the open space from the top ceiling down to the stairs, and the width of the opening the chandelier will hang in, then choose a design that fills the drop without coming close to the handrails.

Where and how low to hang it

Center a stairway chandelier in the stairwell opening, so it can be seen from both the upper landing and the hall below. Keep the bottom of the chandelier at least 7 ft above the highest step underneath it, so nobody on the stairs comes close to it.

Every chandelier comes with a 1.5 m (59 in) chain as standard. Stairwells usually need more, and longer chains can be made to any length you need, as a custom option.

Installing a chandelier over the stairs

Hanging lights for a staircase are harder to install than ordinary ceiling lights: the fixing point is high above the steps, and your electrician will usually need scaffolding or a tall stair ladder. We do not install on site — your local electrician fits the chandelier. Every chandelier is weighed before shipping, and the weight is shown on your quotation and packing list, so the ceiling fixing can be checked in advance. For tall stairwells, our designers can prepare installation instructions and an installation plan for your space, as a paid service. Before production we can also draw a CAD shop drawing with dimensions and the hanging point: we take a $50 deposit for the CAD drawing, the final fee depends on how complex the design is, and drawings are usually ready in 2–5 days. See custom crystal chandeliers. Because the bulbs are hard to reach, long-life LED bulbs are a practical choice — each socket takes up to 85W, and bulbs are not included.

Styles for stairwells

• Staircase chandelier: the F05-5005 is 200 cm tall and Ø80 cm wide, with 24 lamp holders — the best fit for a tall stairwell.
• Two-tier branch designs have two layers of branches around a central stem and suit a one-floor stair or a wider opening.
• Adjustments: chain length, size, frame color, crystal color and color temperature can be changed; a modified model costs a little more than the standard one.
• Finishes: gold (aluminum with an anodized finish), chrome or black.

Delivery and warranty

• Single pieces: in-stock models are ready in about one week and ship door-to-door by express. Shipping and import duties are paid by the buyer and confirmed in your written quotation.
• Custom sizes: made to order in about 35 days.
• Warranty: 2 years on all parts (normal color change of the finish over time is not covered). Spare-part requests are answered within 48 hours.
