K9 Crystal: How It Compares with K5 and Egyptian Crystal

By HongFu Lighting · Crystal chandelier manufacturer · Updated October 2026

K9 crystal is a clear, high-quality optical glass with very few bubbles, and it is one of the most common crystals used in chandeliers. But it is not the only option. Every chandelier we make comes with K5 crystal as standard, and every model can be upgraded to K9 or Egyptian crystal at extra cost. This guide explains how the three compare and when an upgrade is worth it.

What is K9 crystal?

K9 takes its name from a Chinese grade of optical glass. It is very clear and has very few bubbles, so when it is cut into chandelier drops, it throws sharp, bright sparkle. Like all the crystal we use, K9 is lead-free. In lighting, “crystal” simply means cut and polished glass drops — it is not the heavy lead crystal used for traditional tableware.

Which crystal do our chandeliers use?

To be clear: our prices are for chandeliers with K5 crystal. K5 is clear and durable, and it keeps the price reasonable. If you want K9 or Egyptian crystal, just mention it in your quote request. We will quote the upgrade for your model, and because the upgraded crystal takes our supplier longer to make, the lead time is longer too — both are confirmed in your written quotation.

When is an upgrade worth it?

There is no single right answer — it depends on what matters most to you:

  • How close the crystals are seen. Over a dining table or in a living room, people see the drops up close; high up in a stairwell, they are seen from a distance.
  • How much sparkle you want. K9 is clearer and brighter than K5, and Egyptian crystal is the clearest and brightest of all.
  • Budget and timing. K5 is included in our prices; K9 and Egyptian crystal cost extra and take longer to make.

Tell us about your room and what you are looking for, and we will help you choose. Whatever you pick, warm white bulbs of 2700–3000K and clean crystals make the biggest difference to sparkle.

Glass drops and crystal colors

Glass drops are also available. They are lighter than K5 crystal but not as clear, so they can suit projects where weight matters more than sparkle. Crystal color can be changed too: as well as clear crystal, several designs come with amber, black or blue drops. See our custom crystal chandeliers.

Caring for crystal

Wash crystals in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, or wipe them with a cloth lightly sprayed with water and a little isopropyl alcohol; wipe the frame with a dry, soft cloth only. Read our full guide to cleaning a crystal chandelier. If a crystal is lost or broken, we can supply a replacement (charged, plus shipping); wholesale orders ship with spare crystals included.

K9 crystal FAQ

What is K9 crystal?

K9 is a clear, lead-free optical glass with very few bubbles. Cut into chandelier drops, it throws sharper, brighter sparkle than standard K5 crystal.

Is K9 crystal real crystal?

In lighting, “crystal” means cut and polished glass drops. K9 is a high-clarity optical glass, and it is lead-free — unlike the traditional lead crystal used for tableware.

Which crystal comes with your chandeliers?

K5 crystal as standard. Every model can be upgraded to K9 or Egyptian crystal at extra cost; just mention it in your quote request.

Is K9 or Egyptian crystal worth the extra cost?

It depends on your project. K9 is clearer and brighter than K5, and Egyptian crystal is the clearest and brightest; both cost extra and take longer to make. Tell us how close the chandelier will be seen and what matters most to you, and we will help you choose.

Does upgrading the crystal take longer?

Yes. K9 and Egyptian crystal take our supplier longer to make, so the lead time is longer than for K5. The exact lead time and price are confirmed in your written quotation.
