Chandelier Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Size for Your Room

By HongFu Lighting · Crystal chandelier manufacturer · Updated October 2026

A chandelier that is too small looks lost; one that is too big crowds the room; and one that hangs too low gets in the way. Choosing the right chandelier size for a room comes down to three measurements: the length and width of the room, the ceiling height and — in a dining room — the size of your table. Below are three simple rules, each with a size chart in inches and centimeters.

Step 1: Match the diameter to the room

A simple rule: add the length and width of the room in feet, and use the total as the chandelier diameter in inches. A 12 × 16 ft living room adds up to 28, so a chandelier about 28 in (70 cm) across — our Ø60 or Ø80 cm sizes — will look right.

Step 2: Check the ceiling height

  • Clearance: where people walk underneath, keep the bottom of the chandelier at least 7 ft (2.1 m) above the floor.
  • Taller rooms, taller chandeliers: allow about 2.5–3 in of chandelier for every foot of ceiling height. An 18 ft ceiling suits a fixture of roughly 45–54 in, including the chain.
  • Going up a size: if the ceiling is higher than 10 ft, choose one size larger than the room rule gives you.

Mind the height of the chandelier itself, too. With the crystals fitted, our single-tier branch chandeliers are about 40–50 cm (16–20 in) tall, not counting the chain. Under an 8 ft ceiling, 7 ft of clearance leaves only about 12 in, so hang the chandelier over a dining table, a bed or a coffee table, where nobody walks underneath. Over a walkway, a ceiling of 9 ft or more gives you enough room.

How far a chandelier can drop (ceiling to the bottom of the chandelier, including the chain, with 7 ft clear below):

Ceiling heightMaximum drop
9 ft (2.7 m)about 2 ft (60 cm)
10 ft (3 m)about 3 ft (90 cm)
12 ft (3.7 m)about 5 ft (150 cm)
16 ft (4.9 m)about 9 ft (275 cm)
20 ft (6 m)about 13 ft (395 cm)

Every chandelier comes with a 1.5 m (59 in) chain that you can shorten on site; for a tall room, longer chains can be made to any length you need, as a custom option. See our high-ceiling chandeliers and waterfall chandeliers.

Chandelier size for a dining room

Start with the table, not the room:

  • Width: about 12 in (30 cm) narrower than the table, so nobody bumps their head when they stand up.
  • Length: about half to two-thirds of the table length. Round and square tables look best under a round chandelier; long tables need an oval or linear fixture.
  • Height above the table: with an 8 ft ceiling, hang the bottom of the chandelier 30–36 in (76–91 cm) above the tabletop. For every extra foot of ceiling height, raise it by about 3 in.

Kitchen islands: the narrow 80 × 30 cm oval and the 7005 linear chandelier work well over an island. For styles, see our dining room chandeliers.

Chandelier size FAQ

What size chandelier do I need for my room?

Add the length and width of the room in feet and use the total as the chandelier diameter in inches. A 12 × 16 ft room adds up to 28, so a chandelier about 28 in (70 cm) across — our Ø60 or Ø80 cm sizes — fits well.

What size chandelier should I hang over a dining table?

Choose a chandelier about 12 in (30 cm) narrower than the table and about half to two-thirds of its length. For a 6 ft rectangular table, that is our oval 100 × 50 cm size; for a 4 ft round table, a round Ø60 cm.

How high above the dining table should a chandelier hang?

With an 8 ft ceiling, hang the bottom of the chandelier 30–36 in (76–91 cm) above the tabletop. For every extra foot of ceiling height, raise it by about 3 in.

What size chandelier is right for a bedroom?

Use the same rule: a 12 × 12 ft bedroom adds up to 24, so our Ø60 cm size fits well, and small guest rooms suit Ø40–50 cm. With an 8 ft ceiling, hang it over the bed rather than where people walk.

How big should a chandelier be for a high ceiling or two-story foyer?

Allow about 2.5–3 in of chandelier for every foot of ceiling height. A two-story foyer usually needs Ø100–120 cm, in a waterfall or vertical style on a longer chain.
